First aid education stresses the importance of practising safety at all times to prevent accidents and emergencies. An increased safety consciousness helps the employees to work carefully and avoid accidents. This directly makes the workplace a lot safer.

Call or tell someone to call 999. Check the person’s airway, breathing, and pulse frequently. If necessary, begin CPR. If the person is breathing and lying on their back, and you do not think there is a spinal injury, carefully roll the person toward you onto their side.

It usually consists of one-time, short-term treatment, such as cleaning minor cuts, treating minor burns, applying bandages, and using non-prescription medicine.

The first step in any emergency is the recognition of the problem and providing help. When in doubt or when someone is seriously injured or ill, you should always activate the emergency response system by calling 999.

The recovery position refers to one of a series of variations on a lateral recumbent or three-quarters prone position of the body. By doing this, you can place the unconscious but breathing casualty as part of first aid treatment.

Basic first aid treatment includes:

  • Call 911 for medical assistance.
  • Keep the victim lying down.
  • Apply direct pressure using a clean cloth or sterile dressing directly on the wound.
  • Do not take out any object that is lodged in a wound. See a doctor for help in removal.
  • If there are no signs of a fracture in the injured area, carefully elevate the wound above the victim’s heart.
  • Once bleeding is controlled, keep the victim warm by covering with a blanket, continuing to monitor for the shock.

As a first aider, you must be able to:

  • Assess the situation quickly and calmly.
  • Protect yourself and them from any danger.
  • Prevent infection between you and them.
  • Comfort and reassure.
  • Assess the casualty and give first aid treatment.
  • Arrange for help if needed.

First aid is an important life skill that helps reduce fatalities and enables the faster treatment of injuries. It also has an important role to play in providing staff and pupils with a sense of purpose and achievement, giving them the skills that will potentially save lives.
