Patient observations should not be confused with clinical observation or shadowing. Generally, these terms are used interchangeably. However, these terms are not the same as volunteering, direct patient care, and other hands-on experience.

Shadowing means specifically observing the physician-patient interaction. By observing physicians at work, applicants can see how physicians deliver bad news or deal with difficult patients. Applicants will also develop a more realistic understanding of what medicine can and can’t do.

The nurse records clinical observations as part of an admission assessment (Nursing Assessment) at the commencement of each shift and a frequency determined by the child’s clinical status and/or current treatment.

Our observation skills inform us about objects, events, attitudes and phenomena using one or more senses. Additionally, being able to observe and gather information about the world is vital because it is the basis of communicating well.

Observation is a core approach to clinical teaching in healthcare professions. At best, it is an active, purposeful task that stimulates deep learning and the development of professional ‘know-how’. At worst, it is a passive process that leads to either heightened anxiety or total ‘shut down’ in the learner.

An additional benefit of observational research is the depth of the data collected. A good field researcher will collect very detailed notes that can explain behaviour and communication patterns in ways that a survey, interview, or experimental design cannot.

The narrative observation, sometimes called a ‘long’ observation, is an extended written account of the activity. It may include a verbatim record of the language used by the child, level of involvement and other children that they play with and/or a photo.

Always dress in business casual unless instructed to wear different clothing. Slacks and a polo type shirt or dress shirt (no tie) would be acceptable. Never were shorts or t-shirts. Your AHP shirt would be very appropriate unless the facility specifies something specific (like a white dress shirt).

On successful completion of the clinical observation training courses will be able to download, save and/or print a quality assured continuing professional development (CPD) certificate. Our CPD certificates are recognised internationally and can be used to provide evidence for compliance and audit.
