Mandatory Training for Care Homes

The Mandatory Training Group list a wide range of mandatory training courses for care homes. So why are care homes required to provide mandatory training to their staff? Firstly, let’s define what mandatory training means in general. Mandatory training is the training that a care home has determined to be essential for the safe and efficient provision of care and reduce risks to residents, staff and the organisation while meeting local policies and CQC regulatory requirements.

Nursing homes employ a number of different staff groups including nurses, care assistants/support workers, and kitchen staff among others. Statutory and mandatory training courses help to improve the quality of care delivered by nursing and residential homes, maintaining standards and ensuring that care staff remain knowledgeable and motivated.

Care Home Training Obligations

There are a lot of pressures affecting care homes across the UK including lack of funding, staffing shortages and providing services to an increasingly ageing population. Care home staff are providing care (including end of life care) to elderly residents who have many vulnerabilities. Most of this care is provided by frontline care staff (support workers/care assistants) who are often working long shifts and are constantly under various pressures.

It is therefore essential that care home owners and managers should invest in appropriate training for all care home staff and ensure that they all complete this training. Continuing professional development (CPD) is important and should be encouraged as part of care workers’ everyday work.

The Care Standards Act 2000 (Standard 28) requires care home workers to attend the core statutory and mandatory training courses.  The statutory and mandatory training requirements for care home staff are outlined in the next section.

Outlining Care Home Training Needs

All care organisations should carry out ‘training needs assessments’ to establish the most appropriate courses for all their staff (including care and non-care staff). The Mandatory Training Group provides the following statutory and mandatory training courses for care home workers:

  • Health & safety awareness training
  • Food hygiene/food safety courses
  • Manual handling and people moving and handling
  • Safeguarding adults at risk
  • Managing challenging behaviour in care settings
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
  • Equality, diversity and human rights in the care sector
  • Epilepsy awareness and emergency management of medicines

Mandatory Training Requirements for Care Homes

As noted above, all care homes should carry out mandatory training needs assessments to ensure that they provide the most relevant courses for their staff. Annual statutory and mandatory training courses for care homes typically include:

  • Fire safety
  • Manual handling/Moving and handling
  • Health and safety awareness
  • First aid at work.

From a regulatory perspective, there is an expectation that every care home shift is covered by at least one member of staff who has been trained in first aid. We recommend that all care home staff should be training in basic first aid or basic life support.

Which Training Courses are Mandatory for Care Homes?

So which training courses are mandatory for care homes? Let’s make this very clear, there is no specific list of training courses that are mandatory for care homes. Ultimately, the training requirements depend on a number of factors, including the size of the care home, nature and complexity of care services provided and outcomes from the risk assessments carried out within the care home itself.

Health and social care regulatory requirements

Regulation 23 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 states that:

The registered person must have suitable arrangements in place in order to ensure that persons employed for the purposes of carrying on the regulated activity are appropriately supported in relation to their responsibilities, to enable them to deliver care and treatment to service users safely and to an appropriate standard by:

  • Receiving appropriate training, professional development, supervision and appraisal; and
  • Being enabled, from time to time, to obtain further qualifications appropriate to the work they perform.

The Care Quality Commission uses Outcome 14 to ensure that a care home’s service meets the requirements stipulated in regulation 23 and this states that:

People who use services:

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff

This is because providers who comply with the regulations will:

  • Ensure that staff are properly supported to provide care and treatment to people who use services.
  • Ensure that staff are properly trained, supervised and appraised.
  • Enable staff to acquire further skills and qualifications that are relevant to the work they undertake.

So which courses are mandatory for care homes?

The most common mandatory training courses for care homes are:

  • Health and safety awareness training
  • Food safety/food hygiene
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Manual handling of objects (inanimate objects)
  • People moving and handling
  • Mental Capacity Act (including deprivation of liberty safeguards)
  • Safeguarding adults at risk
  • Emergency first aid at work

Some care homes provide annual fire safety training. In some cases, fire safety training can be covered during the organisation’s annual statutory ‘Fire Risk Assessment’.

Common induction framework & professional regulation

The mandatory training courses listed above also reflect and address the majority of the Common Induction Framework objectives. Nursing staff working in a nursing home will also be required to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for revalidation. The Mandatory Training Group lists a wide range of CPD accredited courses that can be used by care home nurses to meet NMC revalidation. Click on the link below to access these CPD courses:

CPD Courses for NMC Revalidation for Care Home Nurses.

NMC professional registration and development requirements include:

  • Medicines administration for registered nurses
  • Supervision, Leadership and management
  • Care planning and record keeping
  • Documentation and report writing

It is essential that care homes should enable their staff to access the relevant learning and development opportunities so that they work safely and effectively.
