Shielding from coronavirus was officially ‘paused’ in England back in August when the risk of contracting Covid-19 was reduced. But with infections rates once again soaring in the UK, there are concerns that those most at risk will need to shield again. The latest figures showed that there were 12,872 new cases and 65 deaths in just one day yesterday, bringing the total number of UK cases to 603,716 and the second wave of Covid-19 continuing to gather pace. Boris Johnson is expected to announce a new three-tier lockdown system in England today, which will see different areas subject to different lockdown rules dependent on the number of cases and the infection rate in each region. As part of these new safety measure, it is thought that Boris Johnson is considering asking 4,500,000 at-risk people to stay at home or take tailored advice to protect themselves over the coming colder months.

At the time of writing, the government is still advising that you do not need to shield at the moment unless you live in an area where local lockdown restrictions have been implemented.   However, this advice is expected to change as the infection rate in the UK continues to rise. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said last month: ‘We keep all aspects of our response to the pandemic under review and in line with the advice of our scientific and medical experts.

‘Shielding for the clinically extremely vulnerable has been paused since the start of August in most of the country while average rates of coronavirus remain low. Shielding is still advised in specific areas of the country where prevalence of the virus is higher.’ Under the proposed new three-tier system, shielding would come back into effect under the red ‘alert level 3’ which states that there should be no social contact with anyone outside your household in either public or in private homes.
