A care home providing accommodation to people with special needs has had its service downgraded from “good” to “inadequate” in all areas.

Otterhayes in Devon has been put into special measures after the Care and Quality Commission (CQC) found it failed to ensure patients’ safety.

One epileptic patient was told to ring staff if needed, something “clearly” impossible during a seizure, the CQC said.

The care home in Ottery St Mary was, at the time of the inspection in October, accommodating and providing personal care to five people with learning disabilities, Down’s syndrome or autism at a property known as Hayes House.

It also provided care to 15 people in supported living properties.

Otterhayes has been approached for comment.
